Can I get vaccinated if I already had COVID-19?
The coronavirus is something we have been battling for over a year now. We have waited patiently for researchers to develop a vaccine that can protect us and help the world go back to normal.
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend that you become fully vaccinated whether you’ve had COVID-19 or not.
However, if you had COVID-19 and you were treated with monoclonal antibodies or convalescent plasma, the CDC recommends that you wait 90 days before getting the COVID-19 vaccine. Richard Watkins, M.D., an infectious disease physician and professor of internal medicine at the Northeast Ohio Medical University, says that the treatment may lead to a “less robust” immune response from your body. Make sure to consult your doctor if you are not sure what treatment you received for COVID-19 while you were hospitalized.
If you have had COVID-19 previously, you may have developed some natural immunity to it once you recovered. However, research does not show a clear understanding of how long that natural immunity might last. We think the vaccine can boost your protection without causing any harm.
Please remember that even after vaccination it is crucial to continue wearing your mask and taking other precautions.
